Roving Count, Twist, and Conditioning
topic
Roving linear density (count) is typically 0.5–2.0 Ne (cotton), selected to give a ring frame draft of 20–40. Roving twist (TF = 0.8–1.4 for cotton) is low enough to allow drafting but high enough for cohesion during transport. Roving moisture conditioning at 65% RH for 12–24 hours before ring spinning is critical: under-conditioned roving (dry) causes static and high breakages; over-conditioned (wet) causes roller lapping.
Role
Roving parameters are the upstream inputs to ring spinning and directly determine its processability. Understanding how roving count sets the required ring frame draft, and how roving twist affects drafting behaviour, is essential for coordinating the roving and ring departments — the most common source of quality disconnects in multi-machine spinning mills.
