Tandem Coating Lines for Multi-Layer Application
topic
Tandem coating lines use two or more sequential knife coating stations with drying ovens between each station to apply multiple coating layers in a single machine pass, building composite coating structures with different compound compositions in each layer such as foam coat base layer plus topcoat, adhesive primer plus functional topcoat, or successive thin layers totalling a target weight that would cause bubble formation if applied as a single thick coat.
Role
Enables multi-layer coating constructions that provide performance combinations unachievable in single-layer coatings by applying different compound types sequentially with intermediate drying or curing between layers, with tandem line architecture being necessary for composite coatings where the base layer must be dried or cured before topcoat application to prevent layer mixing and to achieve the adhesion between layers required for delamination resistance.
