Pneumatic Transport Principles and Air Speed Requirements
topic
Air is not inherently efficient as a transport medium and flows turbulently through ducting, creating vortexes that can entangle tufts and form neps. Required air quantity is calculated as L(m³/s) = A × v, where A is duct cross-section in m² and v is air speed in m/s. The duct must terminate in a device that separates air from material, most commonly a perforated drum (condenser).
Role
Pneumatic transport design directly impacts material quality. Air speed must be sufficient to keep tufts floating (≥10 m/sec) but not so high as to damage fibres (<20–24 m/sec). Dust is always released during transport, providing an inherent dedusting effect.
