Lap Feed vs Tuft Feed Comparison

topic
Lap feed from scutchers provided less problematic evenness since each lap was checked for accuracy of count. Scutchers offered universal application and multi-blend operation but were considerably less economical than tuft feed. Tuft feed systems react more sensitively to variations and require regulating equipment to maintain constant sliver weight. Cards with pneumatic feed must ensure equal batt thickness, width distribution, and density across all chutes.

Role

The transition from lap to tuft feed was driven by economics but required significant engineering to match the feed evenness of laps. This transition also necessitated the development of card autoleveling systems.
