Scutcher and Lap Formation

topic
The scutcher forms a lap for supplying material to cards, with modern versions being exclusively single scutchers (one beater position, usually Kirschner beater, one or two perforated drums). A lap-weighing device detects deviations from set weight and controls a variable speed transmission to regulate weight per unit length. The scutcher is discussed briefly as it has been largely replaced by tuft feed.

Role

While largely obsolete for modern installations, the scutcher remains relevant for specialty applications, multi-blend operations, and older installations. Its lap-weighing principle provided inherent count accuracy that tuft feed systems must replicate electronically.
