Tooth Point Formation and Hardness Profile

topic
The tooth tip has a land (surface) about 0.05–0.06 mm thick terminating in a sharp edge at the front for retaining power. During processing, this edge becomes rounded and must be re-sharpened. Burr formation must be avoided during re-sharpening. Each tooth is hard at the tip (up to 69 Rockwell/1,050 Vickers) and soft at the base (30 Rockwell/300 Vickers) to enable winding onto round surfaces while maintaining wear resistance.

Role

The dual-hardness structure is a critical manufacturing achievement. Too much grinding widens the land beyond useful limits, requiring clothing replacement. The hardness gradient from tip to base means that as teeth are ground shorter, softer metal is exposed, accelerating wear.
