Carding machines process opened and cleaned fibre through a sequence of toothed roller and flat surfaces operating at differential surface speeds to individualise fibres, remove remaining neps, short fibres, and fine trash, and orient fibres into a thin web that is condensed into a continuous sliver through a funnel or coiler tube for delivery to subsequent drawing or combing processes.

Performs the most critical fibre individualisation and cleaning operation in the short-staple spinning preparation sequence, with card clothing design, cylinder and flat speed settings, and production rate governing nep removal efficiency, short fibre extraction, and sliver evenness that fundamentally determine the ultimate yarn quality ceiling achievable regardless of subsequent processing quality.
